GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHT

Due to COVID, I was challenged to create work in my Montreal apartment; the same space that I eat, sleep and work. My usual (toxic) materials were not an option. As a vegan with a juicer, I wanted to explore more sustainable mediums and use some of the large quantities fibrous matter that does not get composted in apartment buildings. By placing fibrous matter directly onto cold pressed paper and pouring cabbage and turmeric juice, a swirling oceanic pattern emerged which inspired the work. Embroidery skills were shown to me by my grandmother, and through its revisiting, I was comforted both in the fond memories it conjured and in the meditative repetition. The Betta (Fighting Siamese as they are called in Hong Kong) were created with embroidery, organic juice painting and paper collage inspired by traditional South East Asian art mediums that were learnt through a 10 year residency.

These 3 seemingly disparate threads interweave through the work combined with my new materiality exploration on floral motifs.  Together, I designed a gallery mock, where the art is displayed on the wall, exploring the idea that I initially explored in my artography studies - that of looking down to see what is familiar in a new familiarity.  Alternatively, when a light is shone through the work, it creates an opening of possibilities, a multitude of tiny sparks of inspiration.  Through their creation I have adapted, I have experimented with the unknown and the unpredictable, I have relaxed into the familiar and through my resilience, I have found inspiration and creation.
