GRANDMOTHER'S GARDEN

Oil, Spray Paint, Ink on Paper
Home Show, Point St. Charles Art Gallery, Montreal, 2022
The 3 works submitted are part of a series entitled ‘My Grandmother’s Garden’ and are inspired by memories of long hot summer days spent with my grandmothers in their beloved gardens. Memories of running barefoot outside after breakfast to prune and fawn over the new growth that was brought early each morning, celebrating in the intoxicating aroma and delicate beauty of the unfolding blooms.

Fostering Dialogue: Gallery Show in Support of Community, Langdon Gallery, Concordia, 2022
The portrait is of a Visual Art student of mine from SIS, an international school in China.   Since both of us have left the school - he graduating and beginning his studies at UCLA and me embarking on my Ph.D studies at Concordia, we are part of a WeChat group of both students and teachers that regularly keep in touch.  This particular student asked me to paint his portrait for him as he was feeling nostalgic about our HS visual arts class. I was just in the midst of packing it up to send to him in LA, but then decided to instead, submit it to this show, as I believe it fosters an interesting dialogue of our role as teachers in our emerging world of international globalization and communication.

TREASURE

Treasure, ISZAF Show, Shenzhen, 2020
my resilience is my humanity. my story has value. my body is my treasure.
There are many parts of my body that are scarred and bruised; so many adventures through this life have made their marks.  I sometimes find myself obsessing about feelings of strangeness,  jagged lines and loud angry marks that seem to cry out to me for attention, for acceptance, for healing. I find myself cringing at their overfamiliarity but without them I wouldn’t have me.  I wouldn't have the pleasure, the adventures, the wild ride that  is my life.  So for this challenge, I celebrate these treasures.
