RESOURCE RESPONSE
In response to Yinka Ilori’s re-purposed chairs, I decided to repurpose a silk Asian lamp shade, using floral forms and sustainable colour dyes. To look at the ‘reconfiguration’ of relations, or ‘complex entanglements through a materialist consideration of forms, but also places, temporalities, and memories’(Babin, 2021, p7), I chose a specific lamp shade which was purchased in Hong Kong. Also, in response to Ilori’s discussion of feeling ‘between cultures’, I decided to work within my current motif of the peony flower as it has a personal connection to me, evoking memories and remembrances of places representing my feelings of cultural transience.
I wanted to explore the play of light and shadow on shapes and colours through my own floral formed lens. ‘If we allow matter to assert itself over and above the metaphors that we impose on it, we realize that it has a life beyond our gaze and interpretation and even a capacity to act autonomously’. (Babin, 2021, p7)
Will the floral forms create an organic installation alone with the repurposed lamp? Will the light emanating from the inside the forms use the light and shadow to create something recognizable? Or will the shadows and light cast on the wall create something ‘that belongs to the entire living and non-living world’.
